When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini), 5.85 inches (iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone X S, iPhone X), 6.06 inches (iPhone 14, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone X R), 6.12 inches (iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro), 6.46 inches (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone X S Max), 6.68 inches (iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro Max) or 6.69 inches (iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro Max) diagonally. Actual viewable area is less. All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary. It’s still not particularly brilliant compared to its Android rivals, however: the Galaxy S7 is miles in front with its 17hrs 48mins, not to mention the S7 Edge with its 18hrs 42mins. As a result, it’s clear Apple’s still got some way to go before it can compete with the top Android phones, but at least it’s an improvement on last year’s iPhone. Apple iPhone 7 review: Verdict It’s a shame there was no 64GB option to provide some sort of middle ground, but overall this is definitely a step in the right direction. Of course, the iPhone 8 starts from 64Gb and goes up from there.

This is where Apple sets out its stall when it comes to its screens: it's not about the sharpness, or the number of nits of brightness – it's how the display looks when it's in your hands that matters. A more welcome addition is the iPhone 7’s improved water and dust protection. Its IP67 rating means you can now drop the phone in up to a metre of water for up to 30 minutes without damaging its internals. This makes it much more practical to use on a daily basis, as you no longer need to worry about accidentally dropping it down the loo or getting caught using it during a heavy rain shower. Apple iPhone 7 review: Display One thing Apple badly needs to sort out, though, is its auto brightness feature. The current setup is to blind you if you look at the phone in the dark, where other phones are more adept at dropping right down to the lowest possible brightness to save you from burning out your retinas. Compatible hardware and software required. Not all content available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. It showed in our benchmark results as well, with the iPhone 7 finishing way out in front of the 6s in Geekbench 4. In the single-core test, for instance, the iPhone 7 scored 3,489 (up from the 6s’s 2,493) and it scored a massive 5,652 in the multi-core test (again, up from 4,102 on the 6s). That’s hugely impressive, and just nudges in front of the S7 and S7 Edge. This model does scratch very easily though, so you'll need to sling it in a case the second you get your hands on it… which rather defeats the object of owning it in the first place.

When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini), 5.85 inches (iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone XS, iPhone X), 6.06 inches (iPhone 14, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XR), 6.12 inches (iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro), 6.46 inches (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max), 6.68 inches (iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro Max) or 6.69 inches (iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro Max) diagonally. Actual viewable area is less. And to that end, the iPhone 7 is a step forward from the 6S. The screen is more colorful – not in an overpowering technicolor way, but just in terms of richness, with the depth of color matching that of the 'cinema screen' according to Apple. It's a hard metric to test, but the color quality is certainly high. Slow Motion, Time Lapse, Face Detection, Panorama, Self Timer, Video Photo, Burst Mode, HDR, Exposure Control, Automatic ModeHow you view this screen depends on what phone you're coming from on – if it's the iPhone 6 or lower, then you'll love the display, as it's brighter, more colorful and just as crisp as before. If, however, you're moving from certain Android handsets, then you might struggle with the lower res, as even many budget Android phones have 1080p screens, and side by side there is a drop. The iPhone 7’s new, improved camera isn’t as immediately impressive as its specs might suggest. While its 12-megapixel sensor has been improved since the iPhone 6s, introducing optical image stabilisation, a brighter f/1.8 aperture that lets 50% more light into the new, six-element lens, and a quad-LED flash, my initial test shots didn’t blow me away. As it's so similar to the iPhone 6S, it's familiar for most iPhone users. The screen is a little hard to reach with one thumb, but not overly so – and the strong build quality in the volume and silencer switch is still as evident as ever.Even in this scenario, though, the iPhone 7 is still supremely accurate. It reproduced 95.8% of the sRGB colour gamut – not quite as high a figure as the best Android handsets, but the quality of those colours means that it is more accurate than most. Going by DisplayCAL’s measurement report, the display isn’t far off what we’d expect from a professional desktop monitor. It’s fair to say that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge still nudge slightly ahead overall, but this is still a step up for Apple.

To access and use all Apple Card features and products available only to Apple Card users, you must add Apple Card to Wallet on an iPhone or iPad that supports and has the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. The loss of this port will impact users in varying degrees: for some people it'll be no more than a shrug before they get on with their day, because they only use the EarPods in the iPhone box – and those are still there, just with a Lightning connector. Graphics performance was excellent, too, finishing GFXBench GL’s offscreen Manhattan 3 test with an average frame rate of 62.6fps. That’s the highest score I’ve ever seen, so you can be pretty sure the iPhone 7 will run anything you throw at it. However, in day to day use you won't notice much wrong with the screen at all, as even at the HD resolution on offer you've still got a decent amount of pixels, so internet browsing and movie watching is still clean, clear and crisp enough. There’s no denying the iPhone 7 is a great smartphone, but none of its improvements are quite as impressive as I’d hoped – it feels more like an iterative S update than the next big evolutionary leap. It’s certainly raised the bar for iPhones a little higher, but in many ways it’s still catching up with its Android competitors, as neither the camera nor display is quite as good as the very best.Apple Retail UK Limited acts as the credit broker and not the lender. Our wooden mannequin, for instance, revealed some very smeary, jagged outlines that simply aren’t present on our iPhone 6s comparison shots. The iPhone 6S, on the other hand, arguably showed more noise, but the end result was much cleaner and pleasing to the eye. This is probably something Apple can fix with a software update, but it’s clear from our test shots that the improvements the iPhone 7 offers are pretty minimal.
