The twist that knits everything together will be patently obvious to most clued-up readers from early on, but thanks to keeping the characterisation of Juliette on the credible side of deranged and doing so to absolute perfection, the story works well. It is easy to underestimate the skill required to pay such meticulously close attention to a character’s portrayal without putting a foot wrong and letting the facade slip, and the very fact that Karen Hamilton has achieved this whilst still managing to elicit sympathy for the tenacious Juliette has left me keen to read more of her work.
